    Car and Driver compares mid engine to rear engine - Cayman R vs. 911 (997) GT3

    This is a strong point of contention between Porsche enthusiasts. Has the rear engine seen its best days? Isn't it time to move the mid-engine Cayman up to the 911's level and stop holding it back? Well, Car and Driver did the kind of comparison that we all really wanted to see. They took a Cayman R vs. a 997 GT3 and the results are interesting but expected especially considering the GT3's higher price tag.

    The Cayman R and the GT3 pull skidpad numbers close to one another, 1.00g vs. 1.01g respectively. The slalom numbers have the GT3 ahead by 2mph with a 49.9 mph run. On the .42 mile road course, the GT3 wins as well. The only time the Cayman beats the GT3 is in the wet.

    Now, would the Cayman R win if it had the GT3 motor as well as GT3 level suspension development? We think so and likely so does Porsche or else why continue to hold the Cayman and Boxster back vs. the 911?

    That's amazing. I think it's the nostalgia factor that's keeping them from changing their flagship car. I dont know what else, the Cayman is clearly a superior design.
